Gallbladder Stones
Accumulation of solid particles in the gall bladder, usually composed of cholesterol or bilirubin.
Reason:
Imbalance in bile-forming substances (cholesterol, bilirubin, bile salts).
Excessive bile.
Slow emptying of the gall bladder.
Obesity, rapid weight loss, and a high-fat diet.
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or liver disease,
Family history/genetics.
Symptoms:
Abdominal pain, usually in the upper right or centre of the abdomen.
Pain that spreads to the back or right shoulder blade.
Nausea and vomiting.
Indigestion or heartburn.
Bloating and gas.
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) in severe cases.
Fever and chills when the gall bladder is infected.
Prevention:
Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise.
Avoid crash diets or rapid weight loss programs.
Limit your intake of foods high in fat and cholesterol.
Eat a diet rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Limit alcohol consumption.

Treatment:
Overview: Asymptomatic gallstones may not require treatment.
Medications: Ursodeoxycholic acid to dissolve cholesterol stones in some cases.
Surgery:
Cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) for symptomatic or complicated gallstones.
Laparoscopic surgery is simple and minimally invasive.
Endoscopic procedures: Used to remove stones from the bile ducts.
Shock wave lithotripsy: Rarely used, involves breaking up stones with shock waves.
Complications:
Gallstone pancreatitis: Blockage of the pancreatic duct by gallstones.
Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder due to blockage by gallstones.
Cholangitis: Infection of the bile ducts due to blockage by gallstones.
Gallbladder cancer (rare).
